Value Statement
The value statement is a time to recall when my values influenced my decision making, how the values were interpreted, and what I was thinking at the time.
Values have played a big part in my decision making. Most people know their values, but for me I had to experience them firsthand. One of these values is serving in my community. I learned that I had a passion for serving the summer before my junior year of high school when a women from a group called Serving Our Neighbors Ministry or SON Ministries came to my church and talked about her organization. She told us that her organization helped feed underprivileged kids lunch over the summer while giving them a place to play when they would be just sitting at home all day. I was very hesitant about volunteering there as I thought that I would be able to have my summer to myself but I eventually applied to help out at SON Ministries after some persuading from my family. I had no idea what I was about to get into.
After just a few times of days volunteering at SON Ministries, I knew this was an organization that was close to my values. At SON Ministries, I have met so many different kinds of people. A majority of kids that are helped by SON Ministries come from all over the world and experienced all different kinds of culture every single day. Many of these kids live below the poverty line and opened my eyes to the other side of my community that I had not experienced until I started volunteering at SON Ministries. I have also developed my value of commitment during my time at SON Ministries. I volunteered for my 3rd straight summer despite getting a job the past two summers and helped out during their school year program both my junior and senior year of high school. Because of my value of commitment, I stayed with SON Ministries past my first summer.
SON Ministries has helped bring out my passion for serving my community and put serving near the top of my values. I have seen the poverty that’s just in my suburban community. I can’t even imagine what kind of poverty is here in Cincinnati compared to in my hometown. One of my missions for my college career is to help out the community. One way I have started doing this is through Bearcat Buddies where I have helped serve the community by tutoring 5th graders at local elementary schools. Bearcat Buddies is just one of the few ways I plan to help the UC community in my time here at the University of Cincinnati. My values have impacted my decisions in multiple ways and would not be where I am without the values I have in place.
Passions Reflection
The passions reflection is for me to explore my passions, how they have changed my view on life, and how I will be able to use my passion in the future.
What?
In my short 18 years that I have been alive, I have been lucky to find some of my passions that I have in life. One of my biggest passions is serving the community. Serving not only helps your community, but it also lets you see life from a different perspective. I have done a lot of different volunteer events in the past, but what helped me establish my passion for serving was volunteering at Serving Our Neighbors Ministry or SON Ministries. I found SON Ministries through the founder of the organization, Kim Emch, who came to my church and told us how SON Ministries helped kids who were given free and reduced lunches during the school year, but are unable to get the discounted lunch during the summer and usually go hungry. SON Ministries feeds these kids lunch every weekday while also hosting a summer camp where kids play games and exercise. I decided to sign up to volunteer the summer before my junior year for the first four weeks despite not knowing what to expect from the program.
So What?
After just the first day of SON’s summer camp, I knew I had found where I needed to be. I found out that 1 in 5 kids in my hometown live below the poverty line and barely have a home to go to, but every day they come to camp and never show their disappointment. Many of the kids that come to SON’s summer camp are refugees from numerous different countries. As a result, I get to experience all different kinds of cultures from around the world all in one place. Many of the kids there look up to me as a role model and want to be just like me when they get older. A number of the kids, after they get too old to attend the camp, come back as volunteers and help as they want to return the favor they were given when they were younger.
I loved SON’s summer camp so much I became a part of their school year program called Kid’s Club. Many of the kid’s parents speak little English and SON Ministries brings in English teachers to teach adults English two nights a week and Kid’s Club is where they bring their kids to play games and have a snack while their parents are learning English. Despite having football and baseball practice on top of school work, I made sure I made time to volunteer at Kid’s Club even if that meant coming straight from practice. This school year is the first time I haven’t been able to attend Kid’s Club since sophomore year and I miss seeing the kids I have known for over 3 years now.
One of the biggest things I miss is seeing the kids at SON’s summer camp and Kid’s Club around the community. When you see the kids they always get a big smile on their face and say “It’s Mr. Jim!”. Seeing that you made a positive difference on a child in your community is one of the most amazing feelings I have ever experienced and it’s why I am always exploring to find new ways to help serve the community I live in. SON Ministries opened my eyes to a glaring problem in my community and gave me the opportunity to help fix it and in turn let me grow my passion for serving.
Now What?
Now that I am here in Cincinnati, one of my goals before I graduate is to find my new “SON Ministries” that I am passionate about and grow my passion for serving. I have been looking around at multiple organizations already in my short time here in Cincinnati and have already signed up to volunteer for Bearcat Buddies where I tutor a student at Roll Hill elementary school every Wednesday. I have also been to Matthew 25 which sends disaster relief to different parts of the world and gives humanitarian aid to the poorest parts of the world. This is just a few of the organizations I plan on volunteering at in my time here in Cincinnati to help grow my passion for serving.
